Matriarch
Donation – Oil on Canvas
I had the privilege of painting this piece for Don, a dear friend, retired physician, and founder of the Canadian African Community Health Alliance. For over 25 years, he has devoted himself to bringing healthcare to rural communities across Africa. Several months ago, he asked if I would contribute a painting for the silent auction at the organization’s 25th anniversary gala.
When I asked for reference images from his time there, this woman stood out immediately. Don told me her name is Koko, a Maasai matriarch from the Terrat community in Tanzania, a region supported by the alliance. There was something undeniable in her presence. Strength, dignity, and a quiet sense of humor all lived in her expression, and I felt compelled to capture that.
The winning bid came from a CACHA member who plans to bring the painting back to Tanzania and present it to a Maasai elder. Koko will have the chance to see herself on canvas, which feels like the most meaningful full circle this piece could take.
I have long admired Don’s work and the impact he has made around the world. Being able to contribute to that, even in a small way, was an honor.
