Beyond the Gaze is an exploration of perception and the human tendency to assign meaning to what we see. We encounter a person, an image, a symbol, or a culture, and almost immediately begin constructing a story around it. We draw conclusions from appearance, expression, clothing, history, and our own assumptions.
This painting intentionally refuses to provide that certainty.
There is no prescribed story behind the figure. No definitive explanation for his expression or symbolism. The viewer is left with the discomfort of not knowing, and that uncertainty is the point.
The work asks us to consider what exists beyond the image we have created in our own minds. What remains when we stop trying to explain, categorize, or define what is in front of us?
